This blog post contains helpful tips and suggestions for hiking at Wilsons Prom, including advice on what to bring and how to prepare for your adventure.
Choose a Suitable Trail
Wilsons Prom has plenty to explore, including excellent hiking trails of varying skill and intensity levels on which you can embark. The shortest and easiest is the 4km Big Drift which starts and ends at the Stockyards campground and takes about one hour. Several other intermediate hikes include the 2km Tidal Overlook Circuit which takes 2 hours, Mount Oberon which takes 2 hours and is 6.8km, and Little Oberon Bay which takes 2.5 hours across 9.5km. The longest and most difficult hike is the 8.5 hour and 35km Southern Circuit, at an elevation of 330m.
Bring the Right Gear
Hiking can be a fun and invigorating low-impact workout that gives you the chance to explore nature and leave your day-to-day stressors behind. Longer hikes necessitate preparation, as it’s important to bring the right gear with you so that you’re well-equipped. In addition to wearing the right clothes and shoes for the conditions, you should make sure you bring enough water to stay hydrated. Having a backpack is also recommended, allowing you to bring along snacks, sun protection, navigation tools, toiletries, bug repellents, and a first aid kit in case of medical emergencies.
Eat a Good Meal
Hiking is just like any physical activity, in that your body needs energy. Eating a good meal an hour or two before a hike can give you the fuel you need to stay energised. You should consider healthy carbs that are easy to digest, such as whole-wheat bread, fat-free yogurt, fruits and vegetables, and brown rice. An hour after a hike, a protein heavy meal can help repair and strengthen your muscles. Granola bars, dried fruit, dried vegetables and cereal also make for healthy, easy-to-eat snacks while hiking.
Let Someone Know
Most hikes are safe, but errors and accidents can occur. For this reason, always let someone know where and when you go so that they can find you if something goes wrong. You can avoid getting lost or encountering other problems by sticking to the designated trail, hiking with one or more companions, and bringing a cell or satellite phone in the event of an emergency.
